WORT 89.9 FM TO AIR LIVE COVERAGE OF APRIL 10TH RALLY

Wall-to-wall bilingual coverage of "Day Without Latinos" rally on Madison's community radio

MADISON – On Monday, April 10th, the recent national controversy over immigration reform comes home to Madison with the "Day Without Latinos" rally and march. WORT 89.9 FM, Madison's listener-sponsored community radio, will broadcast live bilingual coverage of the entire event.

"This is a historic event in Madison," said WORT News Facilitator Nathan Moore. "Undocumented immigrants face barrier after barrier in this country, whether it's education, taxes, labor conditions, or civil rights. I am so excited that WORT can be part of this. Broadcasting live coverage of this rally is the best service we can provide to the community."

WORT will air a special edition of the "Eight O'clock Buzz" (8-9AM) to highlight the issues of the Latino and recent immigrant communities, and to preview the march and rally.

Then at 10AM, as part of world music program "Worldbook of Records," WORT community radio goes out into the community to deliver running reports, interviews, and analysis from the gathering at Brittingham Park. Host Tracy Doreen will complement the reports with folk and world music that addresses immigration and Latino themes.

The recent immigrants and solidarity marchers will continue to the Capitol for a 12-1PM rally. WORT will continue to air reports, interviews, and excerpts of speeches during its "A Public Affair" timeslot.

"We have a terrific lineup of programming for this event, and it should make for truly excellent radio" said Moore. "I think it's critical that we broadcast the concerns and needs of this underrepresented group of people, people that are crucial parts of the fabric of Madison."

Moore continued, "Concern for those underrepresented by other media is part of WORT's mission statement, and I stand firmly by it. WORT airs programming that respects all people. This Monday's live broadcast will be another in that line of programs we've produced that serve our listening community."

WORT-FM is a non-commercial, listener sponsored, member controlled community radio station broadcasting to south central Wisconsin. More information about the station is available at WORT-fm.org.
